Royal Irish Academy – International Affiliations
AStroParticle European Research Area (ASPERA)
Following on from the Royal Irish Academy sponsored ASPERA information day held in Dublin on the 22nd June 2010 and attended by members of the ASPERA Contact Office and local interested parties, the Academy entered a consultation process with the ASPERA Governing Board concerning the possible accession of Ireland to ASPERA. The process was brought to a successful conclusion in December 2010 when Ireland was invited to become an associate member of ASPERA. Ireland’s interests in ASPERA are now represented by the Royal Irish Academy, interacting with the ASPERA coordinator’s office at DESY, Hamburg, Germany. Professor David Fegan MRIA represented Ireland at the Governing Board meeting in Madrid, from 21-22 February 2011. A news update can be read here

The International Council for Science (ICSU)
Since 1978 the RIA has been a member of the International Council for Science (ICSU), which is a non-governmental organisation representing a global membership that includes both national scientific bodies and international scientific unions. Through this extensive international network, ICSU provides a forum for discussion of issues relevant to policy for international science and the importance of international science for policy issues. ICSU also helps create international and regional networks of scientists with similar interests and maintains close working relationships with a number of intergovernmental organisations, especially the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World (TWAS). Because of its broad and diverse membership, ISCU is increasingly called upon to speak on behalf of the global scientific community and to act as an advisor in matters ranging from ethics to the environment.

European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC)
In 2001 the RIA joined with the various national science academies of the EU Member States to form the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC). This body was established to enable the individual national academies to collaborate with each other in providing advice to European policy-makers and to provide a means for the collective voice of European science to be heard. Through EASAC the academies work together to provide independent, expert, evidence-based advice about scientific aspects of public policy to those who make or influence policy within the European institutions. Drawing on the memberships and networks of the academies, EASAC accesses the best of European science in carrying out its work. Its views are vigorously independent of commercial or political bias, and it is open and transparent in its processes. EASAC’s most recent publication – Tackling Anti-Bacterial Resistance in Europe – is available online at: http://www.easac.eu/document.asp?id=31 or in hardcopy format by contacting life@ria.ie.

Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA)
In 2005 the RIA joined the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), which is an interdisciplinary scientific committee of the ICSU that works to improve the quality, reliability, management and accessibility of data relevant to all fields of science and technology. CODATA was established over thirty years ago by the ICSU to promote and encourage, on a world wide basis, the compilation, evaluation and dissemination to reliable data of importance to science and technology. The pre-eminence of the information revolution fueled through the Internet, the World Wide Web and the explosion of personal computing has made CODATA’s mission even more important today.

The InterAcademy Panel (IAP)
The InterAcademy Panel (IAP) is a global network of the world’s science academies, launched in 1993. The RIA is a founding member. IAP’s primary goal is to help member academies work together to advise citizens and public officials on the scientific aspects of critical global issues. IAP is particularly interested in assisting young and small academies achieve these goals. Through the communication links and networks created by IAP activities, all academies will be able to raise both their public profile among citizens and their influence among policy makers. IAP programmes involve interdisciplinary activities and studies on critical issues related to science and technology. IAP also organizes international conferences, sponsors workshops, issues statements and serves as a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences among academies.

All European Academies (ALLEA)
The RIA has been a member of the All European Academies (ALLEA) organisation since its foundation in 1994. ALLEA is a federation of fifty-three academies of sciences and humanities in forty European countries. ALLEA aims to promote the exchange of information experience between academies and to provide national, international and supranational political organisations with advice on science policy. ALLEA has standing committees for intellectual property, science and ethics, and working groups concerned with the history of science, research careers, demographics, privacy and research policy. ALLEA also strives for excellence in science and scholarship, high ethical standards and independence from political, commercial and ideological interests.http://www.allea.org/Pages/ALL/4/731.bGFuZz1FTkc.html

The InterAcademy Council (IAC)
The InterAcademy Council (IAC) was formed in 2000 by all of the world’s science academies to mobilise the best scientists and engineers to provide high quality advice to international organisations such as the United Nations and the World Bank. To this end, the IAC produces reports on scientific, technological and health issues related to the great global issues of our time. The IAC board is composed of the presidents of fifteen academies of science and equivalent organisations. The IAC is also closely tied to the IAP, of which the RIA is a member.

The International Human Rights Network of Academies and Scholarly Societies
The International Human Rights Network of Academies and Scholarly Societies was created in 1993 at a meeting in the National Academy of Sciences in Washington. The Human Rights Network assists scientists and scholars around the world who are subjected to severe repression solely for having nonviolently exercised their rights as promulgated by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It also promotes human rights consciousness-raising and institutional commitment to human rights work among counterpart academies and scholarly societies worldwide.
