5000 year-old ceremonial flint macehead, discovered at Knowth, Co. Meath; possibly deposited as a dedicatory offering. The megalithic passage tomb cemetery at Knowth forms part of the Brú na Bóinne World Heritage site, along with Newgrange and Dowth. Knowth has a history, though not continuous, of both ritual and settlement spanning roughly six millennia, from the beginning of the Neolithic to the modern era. Archaeological excavations began a Knowth in 1962, and the results of that research are published by the Royal Irish Academy in its Excavations at Knowth series of monographs.
