Chemical and Physical Sciences Committee

The Future of Graduate Education in Chemistry and Physics

Wednesday 18 November

Academy House

A one-day seminar, organised by the Chemical & Physical Sciences Committee, was held recently to provide a forum for experienced academic staff and relevant stakeholders to discuss how we might provide the best education at fourth level within the island of Ireland. This meeting focussed on Chemistry, Physics and related interdisciplinary research areas.

The programme started with three talks on existing Graduate Schools in Chemistry, Physics and Nanoscience. This was followed by the main focus of the meeting, breakout sessions with four themes: Chemistry Core, Physics Core, Professional & Generic Skills, Links to Industry, and Funding, Management and Resources. The goal was to share the experience and ideas of those closely involved on a day-to-day basis with graduate students and therefore best-placed to provide leadership. Rapporteurs from the breakout sessions reported to the group in the final discussion session in the afternoon. A report on the day is currently being produced and will be available in 2010.

The agenda is available here

Presentations from the 3 speakers are available here:

Dr Jim Greer, INSPIRE Nanoscience
Dr John Jeffers, SUPA Graduate School in Physics
Dr Susan Quinn, Dublin Chemistry

Dr. Emilie Banide is the winner of the 2008 IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists Dr. Banide is originally from France and has studied in France, America and Ireland. In 2007, she successfully completed her PhD at University College Dublin, where she worked for three years with Professor Michael McGlinchey on the synthesis of Tetracenes via dimerization of Allenes.

Dr Banide won the RIA Prize for Young Chemists 2007 for an essay detailing her work in this area. The RIA Prize for Young Chemists is run by the RIA Chemical and Physical Sciences committee and sponsored by the Irish Times and AGB Scientific. As a result of this award, Dr Banide became Ireland's entry into the prestigious IUPAC International Prize for Young Chemists. Dr Banide will receive a cash prize of $ 1000 and a free trip to the IUPAC Congress, 2-7 August 2009, in Glasgow, Scotland. She will also be invited to present a poster at the IUPAC Congress describing her award-winning work and to submit a short critical review on aspects of her research topics to be published in Pure and Applied Chemistry. The awards will be presented to the winners of the 2008 and 2009 prizes during the Opening Ceremony of the Congress.
