The Hamilton Lecture and Prize Giving 2009

"Noncommutative Algebra : from Hamilton to our time"

This year’s Hamilton Lecture and Prize giving took place on Friday 16th October in association with Invest Northern Ireland.

This year's speaker was Professor Efim Zelmanov, University of California, San Diego

Professor Zelmanov is one of the world's leading group theorists. His most striking work was to elucidate the structure of Jordan algebras, the heart of Jordan's attempt to describe quantum mechanics. Zelmanov's deep analysis led to his solution of the classic "restricted Burnside problem" in group theory, for which he received the Fields Medal in 1994.

Hamilton Prize 2009
Annual prizes of €1000 each have been awarded to the best undergraduate mathematics students as nominated by their University in their penultimate year of study. The prize-giving ceremony took place on Hamilton Day, 16 October 2009, at the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin.

The Hamilton prizes were awarded by Hamilton 2009 speaker Professor Efim Zelmanov, University of California, San Diego, Ms Jenny Young, Invest Northern Ireland who sponsored the prizes, and Professor Nicholas Canny, President of the Royal Irish Academy.

Hamilton Lecture 2008
This year’s Hamilton Lecture took place on Thursday 16th October in association with DEPFA Bank plc and the Irish Times. Venue: Burke Theatre, Trinity College Dublin

This years speaker was Professor Lisa Randall, Physics Department, Harvard University. Warped Passages: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Universe's Hidden Dimensions

Interview with Professor Lisa Randall - Read Irish Times Interview

Abstract
Do we inhabit a three-dimensional universe floating in a four dimensional space? What if the extra dimensions required by string theory were not curled up and unobservably small, but unfurled and vast, extending forever? Could an invisible universe only a tiny fraction of an inch apart in another dimension explain phenomena that we see today in our world?
These are among the questions that we will consider in this lecture about extra dimensions of space.

Hamilton Lecture and Prize Giving 2008

The 2008 Hamilton Lecture was given by Professor Lisa Randall, Harvard University. The title of her talk was Warped Passages: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Universe's Hidden Dimension.

Eight prizes are awarded each year. Each university mathematics department is invited to nominate its "best" student in the penultimate year of undergraduate mathematical studies. The selection of the best student is normally based either on the results of the annual assessment of the year's performance or on the best performance in the ordinary university examinations in Mathematics at the end of the penultimate year.
