International Relations The Royal Irish Academy was founded in May 1785 to promote study in the sciences, humanities and social sciences. While its initial remit did not extend beyond the island of Ireland, the Academy has had strong links for many years into the international world of scholarship. It currently has formal ties with 33 international organisations and is the adhering body for almost all of the discipline-specific international unions.
