The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Anne Enright in discussion with European translators of her writing on European Day of Languages and International Translation Day.

Ireland’s Laureate for Irish Fiction, former Booker Prize winner, Anne Enright with four translators of her work; 

  • Alessandro Achilli (Italy)
  • Hans-Christian Oeser (Germany)
  • Isabelle Reinharez (France)
  • María Porras Sánchez (Spain) 

The discussion focused on issues such as cultural transfer, Irishness, untranslatables, markets and audiences. There were also readings from selected passages of Enright’s works in English and by her translators in their languages.
