The Department of Communications Energy and Natural Resources held a high level strategic workshop on Data Centres and Cloud Computing on 1 May, 2009. At that workshop one of the challenges identified was the development of future skills in this area. It was proposed that better links should be fostered between industry and academia to develop this expertise in Ireland. This recommendation was included in the “Technology Actions for the SMART Economy” report published by the Department in July, 2009. On foot of this recommendation this half-day workshop featured five Industry experts outlining these key directions and why it is important to carry out R&D in these areas and to include them in our educational programmes. The workshop was addressed at Education Professionals, PhD and Research students, Directors of Research Centres and Industry. At the recent Global Irish Economic Forum, Data Centres, Cloud Computing and Smart Communications Networks formed the core of a session on “Technology Actions to Support the Smart Economy”. As a result this workshop was both timely and topical.
