Matthew Jebb is Keeper of the Herbarium at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin. His research interests at the gardens are on conservation of the Irish flora, invasive alien plant species, and island floras. His taxonomic research encompasses a number of south-east Asian plant groups. Matthew formerly held a post-doctoral position at Trinity College Dublin working on the Flora of Thailand, and prior to that lived in Papua New Guinea for six years.
F J Smith is Professor Emeritus at Queen’s University Belfast N. Ireland. His research interests include Artificial Intelligence and the neural processes underlying Insect Navigation. He is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and he was awarded an OBE in 2001.
Graduated in Archaeology at Queens University Belfast in 1965 and received his Ph d from the same institution in 1977. From 1965 to 1983 he worked as a curator of Prehistoric Antiquities. In 1983 he took up the position as Professor of Archaeology where he remained until his retirement. He is now Emeritus professor of Archaeology and continues to live in Cork. His research interests include a special interest in the human resettlement of North West Europe after the end of the last Ice Age and in the History of Archaeology. Besides working in Ireland he has worked on the Isle of Man and in Arctic Norway and Russia. His main excavations include Newferry, Mount Sandel and Ferriter’s Cove. Recently he was awarded the Prehistoric Society’s 2009 Europa Prize for outstanding to contributions European Prehistory
