The Kavli Medal and Lecture for Environment or Energy
The Royal Society’s medals, awards and prize lectureships provide an opportunity to celebrate and recognise outstanding scientific achievement. We invite you to submit nominations for the 2012 medals, awards and prize lectureships.
We draw your attention in particular to the Kavli medal and lecture for excellence in all fields of science and engineering relevant to the environment or energy. The recipient will give a lecture at the Royal Society in 2013. For further details on this award and to download the nomination form please see the website.

Balzan Prizes 2012
The General Prize Committee of the “Prize” Foundation invites the most prestigious international cultural and scientific institutions (universities, research institutes and academies) and figures recognized by the General Prize Committee as highly distinguished in the chosen fields for that year to submit names of candidates for the four annual Balzan Prizes. Nominations must be submitted by 15 March of the relevant year and supported by justification for the candidate’s nomination, including a list of his/her most important publications and a complete biography. Self-nominations are not accepted.
The Balzan Prizes 2012 will be awarded in the following subjects
- Jurisprudence
- Musicology
- Solid Earth Sciences, with emphasis on interdisciplinary research
- Epigenetics
Each of the four Balzan Prizes is worth 750,000 Swiss francs.
Half the prize sum will be awarded to the Prizewinner in recognition of his/her work, while the other half will later be earmarked by the Prizewinner for research projects which should preferably involve young researchers or research groups. The research proposal will be subject to the approval of the General Prize Committee.
Careful consideration will be given to all nominations.
The nominations will be treated confidentially.
In order to be valid, the nominations must be supported by the following documents
- a statement of reasons for the nomination, including the mention of particularly important publications;
- a bibliography (including the above-mentioned publications, citing publisher and publication year, and adding translations of original titles should there be works translated into other languages) for candidates in the humanities;
- detailed list of 10 to 20 of their most important publications (with full bibliographical citation) for candidates in the sciences;
- a curriculum vitae specifying present position, academic activities, date and place of birth, nationality, residence and address;
- a recent photograph with indication of copyright if applicable
It is to be noted that more than one candidate may be nominated for each prize subject. Furthermore they do not have to be part of the institution of the individual making the nomination, nor of the same nationality.
Personal applications will not be considered.
Nominations much reach the General Prize Committee by March 15, 2012.

The “Angiola Gili and Cataldo Agostinelli International Prize and The “Modesto Panetti e Carlo Ferrari International Prize”
This year the Academy of Sciences of Turin will award the following Prizes:
- The “Angiola Gili and Cataldo Agostinelli International Prize” amounting to € 15.000, to a scientist who has achieved distinction in the field of applied or theoretical mechanics or classic mathematical physics during the last ten years. The nomination must reach this Academy by the 31st March 2012.
- The “Modesto Panetti e Carlo Ferrari International Prize” amounting to € 15.000, to a scientist who has achieved distinction in the field of applied mechanics. The nomination must reach this Academy by the 15th April 2012.
In accordance with the rules of the Prize I am pleased to invite you to present a nomination. The nomination must be accompanied by an exhaustive statement of the reasons for proposing the candidate and by a short curriculum, together with a list of the most important publications.
