Volume I : Medieval Art and Architecture, c.400-1600
Volume I covers the period c. 400–1600 and deals with all media from architecture to manuscript illumination to fine metalwork. It aims to provide a reference source for identifying, comprehending and contextualising the visual culture of medieval Ireland and the factors that influenced its production and appearance. There are over 360 separate entries, together with an introduction and appendices – the latter including biographical information on named craftsmen. The text is being written by the editor assisted by her volume board and 36 external contributors. The external contributors are all experts in their fields and are drawn from most of the major educational and cultural institutions in Ireland together with a number from the UK.
All research for the volume is now complete and nearly all of the external contributions have been received. The text will include around 600 images and work is well underway in securing a range of photographs, antiquarian drawings and specially commissioned artwork.
