Public Call: Sylvia Cullen, Writer

Grangegorman Histories issued a public call in July 2023 inviting applicants to contribute to the uncovering, cataloguing and commemorating of the history of the Grangegorman site. The five successful awardees have received funding to develop their work through research and creative endeavors. Here we’re profiling the work of Writer, Sylvia Cullen.

About the project

Flighty Creatures is a new trilogy of short stories for podcast which will showcase the stories of women who dwelt within the long standing and no longer standing buildings of Grangegorman. Having worked in a former asylum and two prisons, Sylvia is intent on exploring these woman’s stories and history in a sensitive, imaginative and authentic way.

About the writer

As writer-facilitator of the award-winning Arts Ability Writing Programme, Sylvia Cullen has spent fourteen years working with vulnerable adults in the Mental Health sector and is a member of the Writers-in-Prisons panel and continues to enjoy working with prisoners at Shelton Abbey Open Prison. Having familiarity to these settings Sylvia is drawn to the challenge of creating stories from the written records of the Workhouse, the Asylum and the Womens Penitentiary at Grangegorman in a sensitive, imaginative and authentic way
