The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest Academic honour in Ireland.

Drafts of forthcoming atlases, Cork and Galway.

Cork

Cork Gazetteer Image

A draft gazetteer of topographical information on Cork city with a full list of abbreviations is now online and available to download as pdf documents (Cork Gazetteer and Abbreviations). The draft was compiled as part of work in progress on the Irish Historic Towns Atlas of Cork by Máire Ní Laoi. The work was part-funded by the Built Heritage element of the Environmental Fund, Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

Galway

Galway Gazetteer Image

A draft gazetteer of topographical information on Galway city with full list of abbreviations is now online and available to download as pdf documents (Galway Gazetteer and Abbreviations). The draft was compiled as part of work in progress on the Irish Historic Towns Atlas of Galway by Jacinta Prunty and Paul Walsh. The work was part funded by the Heritage Council 2010 Research Grant Scheme.

The seventeenth-century pictorial map of Galway is a complementary resource and has been digitised by the James Hardiman Library, NUI Galway, is available here.
