The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Andreas Hess is professor of sociology at University College Dublin. His main interests are in historical sociology, the history and sociology of ideas, and Basque Studies. He is the author of "The Political Theory of Judith N. Shklar. Exile from Exile" (2014) and "Tocqueville and Beaumont. Aristocratic Liberalism in Democratic Times (2018); and (together with S. Ashenden) editor of "Between Utopia and Realism. The Political Thought of Judith N. Shklar" (2019) and Judith Shklar's posthumously published lectures "On Political Obligation" (2019). He serves currently as the joint editor-in-chief of 'Society'.
