The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Aoife Foley

Dr Aoife Foley is Chair of Net Zero at The University of Manchester, a Professor in Energy Systems and Editor in Chief of Elsevier's Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews, the leading global journal in the field of sustainable energy according to Google Scholar. She also sits on the editorial board of other major journals in the field of renewable energy and transport. Prior to joining academia, she spent 12 years in senior project management roles in industry, where she led key transformative projects in energy and transport, telecommunications, and pharmaceuticals.

Since joining Queen’s University Belfast in 2011 she has rapidly gained an international reputation as an expert in energy and power systems and successfully accessed highly competitive funding to grow a large research group whose work informs policy and decision making in government and industry. Her research expertise covers wind power forecasting and integration, transport and energy market modelling, and demand response using intelligent ICT, energy storage, electric vehicles, and smart appliances. A key theme in her research is the interlinking of the 4 E’s of environmental protection, social equity and economics and energy security in the context of the low carbon transition.

She has a BE (Hons) in Civil & Environmental Engineering (1996) and PhD in Energy Engineering (2011) from University College Cork, as well as a masters in Transportation Engineering (1999) from Trinity College Dublin. Finally, she is a Chartered Engineer (2001), a Fellow of Engineers Ireland since (2012), and a Senior Member of the IEEE (2021).
