We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Professor Cormac Taylor received his PhD in Pharmacology in UCD in 1996 prior to a postdoctoral fellowship in Harvard Medical school from 1996-2001. He  currently holds an appointment as Professor of Cellular Physiology at the School of Medicine and Medical Science and the Conway Institute, University College Dublin. Research in the Taylor Lab is directed towards expanding our understanding of the physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms by which changes in micro-environmental oxygen levels regulate gene transcription in cells. A key focus of this work is the identification of new therapeutic targets in inflammatory disease. Professor Taylor was elected as a member of the Royal Irish Academy in 2014. He was awarded the 2014 Nature mid-career mentorship award and the 2017 Takeda Distinguished Researcher Award from the American Physiological
