The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest Academic honour in Ireland.

Deirdre Lewis

Dr. Deirdre Lewis B.A.(mod) PhD PGeo EurGeol

Deirdre is Technical Director Geology for SLR Consulting in Europe, part of a global natural resources and environmental consultancy.  She graduated in 1982 in Natural Sciences from Trinity College Dublin and completed her doctoral studies in Geology in TCD in 1986.  Since then, she has worked as a professional geologist in projects spanning Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia and South America.  She works mainly on minerals and renewable energy projects for public and private clients.

Deirdre has worked extensively on behalf of the EU and World Bank on institutional strengthening projects across Africa in the minerals, social and environmental regulatory fields in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania, Mali and Burkina Faso among others.  She has a particular interest in the social impacts of resource developments.

Deirdre is an active member of the 'Geoscience Ireland' network, a past President of the Institute of Geologists in Ireland (2011-2013) and is a member of the Geological and Geographical Sciences Committee of the Royal Irish Academy since 2009.
