The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Dermot Green

Reader in Physics QUB

Dermot Green is a Reader in Physics at Queen's University Belfast. His research focusses on theoretical atomic, molecular and optical physics, in particular developing understanding of antimatter interactions with atoms and molecules. Born and raised in Belfast, he has spent time at Oxford, Durham and Harvard Universities. He presently directs a research group of PhD students and Research Fellows under his ERC grant "ANTI-ATOM", following an EPSRC Fellowship in Theoretical Physics. He was awarded the 2019 Institute of Physics Sir David Bates Prize for outstanding contributions to quantum, atomic, molecular and plasma physics. He is a Fellow of the Young Academy of Europe, and is currently Chair of the Institute of Physics Ireland. He has three young children who he adores.
