The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Donncha O'Connell

Donncha O'Connell is an Established Professor of Law at NUI Galway where he has served terms as Dean of the Faculty of Law (2005-2008) and Head of the School of Law (2013-2017). He is a Commissioner (part-time) of the Law Reform Commission and a member of the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland. He has also been a member of the Legal Aid Board. Professor O'Connell spent the academic year 2009-2010 as a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Human Rights, LSE. He was the Senior Irish member of FRALEX, a legal expert group that advised the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights and, prior to that, the Irish member of the EU Network of Independent Experts on Fundamental Rights. From 1999-2002 he was the first full-time Director of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties. He has also served on the boards of Amnesty International (Ireland), FLAC, INTERIGHTS and Druid Theatre Company.
