Dr Mary Canning

Dr Mary Canning, is the 57th President of the Royal Irish Academy.

Dr Mary Canning was appointed Chair of the Governing Authority of Maynooth University in December 2019 and has served as Senior Vice President of the Royal Irish Academy since 2018. 

She holds a PhD in Literature from University College, Dublin.  As a former World Bank Lead Education Specialist based in Washington DC, she worked on education policy in a wide range of countries in Europe and Central Asia from 1992-2007.  From 2006 to 2017, she served on numerous OECD Higher Education Examiner teams and has published extensively on higher education reform in Europe and Latin America for the World Bank and OECD.  She was a board member of the Higher Education Authority from 2007 to 2017 and, in 2009, she was appointed to the National Strategic Review of Higher Education in Ireland.    She served on the Board of the Long Room Hub in Trinity College Dublin from 2013- 2017.  In 2010, she was elected to the Royal Irish Academy and in 2014 was awarded a D.Litt (honoris causa) by the NUI.
