This discussion panel will examine how the Proclamation is treated in the arts, politics, and academic discourse.

The 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic is receiving particular attention in this centenary year. The Proclamation was intended as a justification for the revolution, anchoring Irish identity in a historical and normative context. The place of foundational texts in identity formation is evident, but it is only with repeated interrogation that they retain vitality. There are a number of artistic projects in preparation on the subject of 1916 and its continuing relevance. Several of these make explicit reference to the Proclamation. The Proclamation has also been appealed to in some current political campaigns and the panel will cover some of these.
