Françoise Henry at UCD: Towards a history of Art History in Ireland

Born in Dublin, Dr. Eileen Kane was educated at the Dominican College, Eccles Street and at University College Dublin, from which she graduated with a B.A. in Latin and French, M.A. in French, and Higher Diploma in Education.  After some years teaching at Secondary level, and two years in the Irish Diplomatic Service, she was invited by Dr. Françoise Henry to join the Department of the History of European Painting, in 1967, as Assistant, tasked with delivering the Purser-Griffith Lectures. Along with lectures and seminars in the Degree courses, she continued to deliver and direct the Purser-Griffith Lectures until her retirement in 2000. Eileen was the first student to complete a doctoral thesis in the History of European Painting under the direction of Françoise Henry. Her research interests and publications have centred around late mediaeval art in Avignon and Rome, and religious art in Dublin in the nineteenth century. Since retiring from University teaching, she has specialized and published widely on Christian art.
