Membership of the Young Academy of Ireland Opens14 July 2022
The first Call for Members of the Young Academy of Ireland – a network of early career researchers and innovators – was opened today by the Royal Irish Academy.
The Young Academy of Ireland (YAI) will bring together early career researchers and innovators from the island of Ireland providing an opportunity to work with peers across disciplines on issues of common interest.
As part of a global initiative of Young Academies, the Young Academy of Ireland will network Ireland’s talented community of early career researchers and innovators with their international counterparts and create the opportunity and space for collaborative contributions to national and global decision-making on issues that matter to society.
The YAI is a forum for talented emerging leaders and strives for a membership that reflects equality, diversity and inclusion. It is an initiative of the Royal Irish Academy with support from Accenture.
The President of the Royal Irish Academy, Dr Mary Canning welcomed this new Academy, saying that it was both a significant step for the Royal Irish Academy and an extremely timely initiative:
‘The Royal Irish Academy is delighted to be launching the Young Academy of Ireland. We must be part of inspiring the next generation of talent, giving early career researchers a critical voice at a time when it is needed most and when the challenges we face as a society, local, national and international are all the more acute. Now more than ever we need to be creative and interdisciplinary, sharing and advancing knowledge on scientific and humanitarian questions and supporting and encouraging emerging leaders. I look forward to seeing how the members of the Young Academy of Ireland broaden their horizon, bringing their different perspectives together to influence policy and promote change.’
Medb Corcoran, Ireland Lead, Accenture Labs, said ‘We are delighted to support the launch of the new Young Academy of Ireland. Ireland is a leader in terms of R&D and we are pleased to support our future talent to come together and collaborate in this forum. Working at The Dock, Accenture’s flagship R&D and Global Innovation Centre, I experience the benefits of research and collaboration across all disciplines, every day. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone working in this area.’
The Call is Open to all early career researchers who demonstrate a high level of excellence (interdisciplinary and practice-based research) in their discipline or research field. This includes scholars working in any research-based discipline, including the natural, physical and social sciences, arts and humanities, or researchers working in private industry, the public and not-for-profit sector, or civil society organisations.
The YAI is targeted at scholars in the early stages of their career who have been selected for the excellence of their research impact and commitment to public service. (‘Young’ refers to career stage rather than to the age of Young Academy members)
Applications for membership to the Young Academy are open until 30 September 2022 and details of selection criteria and how to apply can be found at www.yai.ie. The YAI is supported by the Royal Irish Academy and Accenture Ireland.
