The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

New Executive Director

Dr Siobhán O’Sullivan has been confirmed as the new Executive Director of the Royal Irish Academy with effect from 19th September 2022.

Dr O’Sullivan has been Chief Bioethics Officer in the Department of Health since 2011 and was previously Director of the Irish Council for Bioethics between 2002 and 2010.  Siobhan graduated in 1994 with a primary degree in Biomedical Science from what is now TU Dublin; her PhD is from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden; and she also holds postgraduate qualifications in Human Rights Law, Healthcare Ethics and Law, and Leadership.

On behalf of the Officers and Council, the President Dr Mary Canning, thanked Dr Tony Gaynor for his service, his contribution to the Royal Irish Academy and for helping with this smooth transition.
