As part of Heritage Week 2022, the Irish Historic Towns Atlas will be in Westport as part of the Westport Historical Society Walking Tour and Talk.
The planned eighteenth-century estate town of Westport is a designed landscape with links back to the pre-plantation landscape of Murrisk, Muraisc, meaning a ‘sea-shore marsh’, and Burrishoole, Buiríos Umhaill, or the ‘burgage of the Owels’ suggesting an Anglo-Norman connection in the local area. Peter Browne, Westport House placed an advertisement for tradesmen, in the Dublin Faulkner’s Journal on 17 March 1767 to construct the new town of Westport. The Atlas of Westport, in preparation, will outline the town’s topographical history from its earliest foundations to 1900.
Maynooth University graduate Ben Callan, Irish Historic Towns Atlas Editorial Assistant Jennifer Moore and authors Éamon O’Flaherty and Siobhán Sexton share details of recent research on Westport that was carried out with the support of The Heritage Council, Irish Historic Towns Atlas and Mayo County Council. Westport Historical Society’s Bronach Joyce will provide a guided walk of Westport Quay.
