The Royal Irish Academy and Cliara Development Company invite you to an afternoon of events on Clare Island.


11:45: Meet at Clare Island Community Centre

Welcome to the island delivered by Ciara Cullen, Macalla Farm, Clare Island.

Launch of recent volumes of New Survey of Clare Island by Jane Conroy, Vice-President for Research, Royal Irish Academy (RIA).

Followed by speeches by Martin Steer, Managing editor of the NSCI series and John Breen, co-editor of NSCI Volume 10: Land and freshwater fauna.

Presentation of a full set of the original and new surveys to the new island reference library, thanks to funding from the Mayo County Council.

A lunch of soup and sandwiches will be served. 

14:00: Walking Workshop - leaving from the Community Centre 

This will be a very special opportunity to explore the natural and cultural heritage of Clare Island. The workshop will visit various locations where local experts and editors of New Survey volumes will discuss the archaeology, the changing landscape, human habitation, geology and the flora and fauna of the island. 

Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a raincoat. Transport can be arranged based on needs. 

16:00: Tea/coffee in the Community Centre

Getting there

Please note there will be no transport to the island organised by the RIA. It is possible to take a train to Westport and a taxi to Roonagh pier (30-minute taxi ride from Westport train station). 

Two ferry services operate between Roonagh pier and the island. The timetables can be found here (O'Malley's)  and here (O'Grady's). It is advisable to book the ferry online beforehand.  

The Community Centre is a five-minute walk from the pier.
