The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Michael MacDonagh

National Monuments Service

Michael MacDonagh is Chief Archaeologist in Ireland's National Monuments Service (NMS). The NMS in the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage is charged with and committed to conserving and managing Ireland's archaeological heritage. A graduate of University College Dublin, Michael joined Transport Infrastructure Ireland in 2001 (then National Roads Authority), following an early career in commercial and public sector archaeological management across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Berlin-Brandenburg. He was Chair of the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland from 2015-2017 and Deputy Joint Secretary in the North South Ministerial Council for 4 years before taking up appointment as Chief Archaeologist in July 2017.
