We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Declan Patton

Professor Declan Patton
Declan qualified as a nurse in 1996. In 2002, he commenced employment as a nurse lecturer in University College Dublin and for the next 12 years held a number of senior leadership positions at School and University level. Since 2014, Declan has been Director of Nursing and Midwifery Research in the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences and since 2018 coupled this with being the Deputy Director of the new Skin Wounds and Trauma (SWaT) Research Centre at the RCSI. He is responsible for developing programmes of patient outcomes focused research, supervising research degree students to successful completion of their PhD and MSc research projects, and driving outputs into high ranking peer reviewed health journals, establishing the SWaT Research Centre as a key international opinion leader in wound care education and research. His own research interests have a strong focus on patient’s outcomes, patient safety and medical device research. He currently has a particular interest in the areas of pressure ulcers, venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers. Declan has accumulated over 5 million euro in funding and has over 100 peer reviewed journal publications.  He has also led the development of a significant number of Collaborative and Non-Disclosure research agreements with companies since 2014, and has overseen a large growth in the number of nursing PhD students in the RCSI as well as in the number of taught MSc Nursing students. In 2021, Declan was appointed by the Minister for Health to the first National Research Ethics Committee for Medical Device (NREC-MD) research. In terms of outreach, Declan has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the Q1 Journal of Wound Care and been appointed as an adjunct Professor at Fakeeh College of Medical Sciences in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; School of Nursing and Midwifery, Griffith University, Australia and Honorary Senior Fellow, Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health, University of Wollongong, Australia. He is also a Clinical Practice Guidelines Reviewer for DEBRA international.
