THE ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY IS IRELAND'S LEADING BODY OF EXPERTS IN THE SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

100 years on: Ireland; Finland; New Zealand; Poland - A comparative history

13 September 2022

If you missed last week's Academy Discourse, which took the form of a comparative panel discussion, you can watch it back now.

A comparative discussion, chaired by Robert Gerwarth MRIA, with Professor Charlotte Macdonald (New Zealand), Dr Jochen Böhler (Poland), Professor Marjaana Niemi (Finland) and Mary E. Daly MRIA (Ireland) to examine developments in the context of the Irish state’s history. The countries selected, apart from Ireland, have some common characteristics with the Irish state. In this Discourse, each historian identifies and presents two or three developments from their research that their state achieved and two or three that it got wrong or did not achieve.
