We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Government Science Advisor announcement welcomed by RIA

The Royal Irish Academy welcomes today’s announcement by the Government to approve the appointment of a Government Science Advisor and establish a National Science Advice Forum.

The Royal Irish Academy welcomes today’s announcement by the Government to approve the appointment of a Government Science Advisor and establish a National Science Advice Forum.

Responding to the announcement, Dr Mary Canning, President, Royal Irish Academy said

'the new structure offers an exciting opportunity to embed and connect the knowledge and know-how of Ireland’s higher education sector with that of the public policy sector to tackle the big challenges facing Ireland.

A sustainable and thriving future society and economy requires the collaboration and know-how of the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences and today’s announcement recognises and responds to this imperative.'

The Royal Irish Academy supports the participation of Irish experts in the science advisory projects of the International Science Council, European Academies Science Advisory Council, and the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism. Irish experts have made significant contributions to international science advice on a range of topics including climate action to protect health, protecting pollinators, and countering fake news.
