The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Declan O'Loughlin

Electronic Engineer and Assistant Professor TCD

Declan O'Loughlin is an Electronic Engineer and Assistant Professor at Trinity College Dublin. His research looks at the uses of electronics and electromagnetics in medicine and biology, specifically impedance and microwave devices for non-invasive imaging and monitoring. Declan studied at the University of Galway working on a radar-based breast imaging device and examining the clinical performance of the modality in diverse patient populations. His current research looks at the design and development of devices for hydration monitoring. Declan believes in open research and scholarship, and has developed and released open-source toolboxes and data for medical microwave imaging.
