THE ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY IS IRELAND'S LEADING BODY OF EXPERTS IN THE SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Summer 2014 outreach under way

25 June 2014
In early June Kate and Michael finished the mammoth task of checking the text of DIFP IX by reading out loud the typescript of our new volume against the original documents. This is in-depth and rigorous work - we have been at it since February, but it allows a very close edit of the text.

On 3 June Kate spoke on ‘post-independence Ireland and India’ at a major international conference on ‘Ireland and the Colonies’ held at the Institute for Collaborative Research in the Humanities at Queen’s University, Belfast.

Michael’s 'Ireland, the United Nations and the Congo' was launched by former Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces Lieut General Seán McCann at a packed gathering in the Officers’ Mess at McKee Barracks in Dublin on the evening of 3 June.

On 6 June Michael appeared on The Seán O’Rourke Show on RTE Radio 1 talking about the covert Irish role in providing weather forecast information from which the D-Day landings were given the go-ahead by General Eisenhower.

At the end of the month Michael delivered one of the keynote addresses at a conference held at National University of Ireland Galway on Ireland and the Second World War. The programme can be found here.
