The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Professor Donnan is Director of the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice and co-Director of the Centre for International Borders Research, both at Queen’s University Belfast.  He is a Fellow of the British Academy, a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. He is chair of the Esperanza Trust and the British Council's Newton Fund Programme for Social Science; and he chaired the Anthropology and Anthropology and Development Studies panels in RAE2008 and REF2014 respectively, when he was also a Main Panel Member for Social Sciences.  He has conducted extensive field research at Pakistan’s borders with Kashmir and Afghanistan and has published over twenty books and lectured worldwide.
