The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Roger George Hamill Downer

Professor Downer enjoyed a successful academic career as a teacher and researcher (neurobiology and agricultural chemistry) before becoming involved in senior academic leadership. Having served as Vice President (External) at the University of Waterloo and President of the Asian Institute of Technology prior to accepting the Presidency of the University of Limerick following retirement from this position, he accepted membership of several boards in Canada, UK and Ireland, including public, private and volunteer sectors and embracing such diverse fields as health sciences, economic development, education (early childhood, secondary and tertiary) and professional sport.
