The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Professor John McGilp is our current Treasurer. He was elected to this position in 2013.

John McGilp is the Professor of Surface and Interface Optics at Trinity College Dublin (TCD). He is internationally known for establishing in Europe the field of surface and interface optics, “epioptics”, and founding the biannual “Optics at Surfaces and Interfaces” (OSI) international conference. He has served as Chair of the Institute of Physics in Ireland and Head of the School of Physics and Bursar of TCD. Currently a Board Member and a member of the Audit Committee at TCD he was elected a Member of the Royal Irish Academy in 2003.
