The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Barry Smyth (BSc, PhD, Hon. DTech(RGU), MRIA) is a scientist and entrepreneur. He holds the DIGITAL Chair of Computer Science at University College Dublin. He is a member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Founding Director of the Insight Centre for Data Analytics. Barry's research interests cover a broad range of topics in the area of artificial intelligence and recommender systems and he has published more than 400 scientific articles in leading journals and conferences. Barry is also an entrepreneur. He co-founded ChangingWorlds (acquired by Amdocs in 2008) and HeyStaks, and currently serves as a board member or advisor for a number of companies.
