Book of Ballymote

27 November 2015
The Book of Ballymote has its own box thanks to the generosity of Members and friends of the Library.

Earlier this year we asked for help to fund a specially commissioned box for our C14th century manuscript, The Book of Ballymote, and we were delighted with the response. With generous funding from donors, including Roinn na Nua-Ghaeilge, UCC and the Sligo Field Club, the library raised sufficient funding for the construction of a customised box to hold the manuscript. This was made by the conservator John Gillis. Historian and calligrapher Timothy O'Neill inscribed the donors' names on vellum. This beautifully inscribed vellum is stored with the manuscript as a permanent reminder of their generosity and the continuing connection of the present generation with the book.

The Book of Ballymote is an iconic and hugely important 14th century manuscript containing key texts including the Book of Invasions, Book of Rights, Dindshenchas. Read more about the Book of Ballymote here.
