Modern Ireland in 100 Artworks: The Troubles by J.G Farrell.27 November 2015
Written in 1970, The Troubles was the first novel of what became known as the Empire trilogy.
Winner of the 1971 Faber memorial prize, the book is set in rural Ireland during the War of Independence.
In 1971, the Man Booker Prize changed its rules, ceasing to award books retrospectively. This led to many books published in 1970 missing out on the prize, The Troubles was amongst them.
In 2008, the Lost Booker Prize, a once-off award to honour the books that missed out on the prize in 1970, was posthumously given to Farrell for The Troubles.
