Modern Ireland in 100 Artworks: Madonna Irlanda

22 January 2016

Madonna Irlanda by Michael Farrell, 1977

This week’s Modern Ireland in 100 Artworks is the ‘Madonna Irlanda’ a series of paintings by Michael Farrell (1940-2000) painter, and printmaker. The series portrays Ireland as a mistress, based on Francois Boucher’s portrait of the Irish courtesan Marie-Louise O’Murphy; the 18th-century mistress of Louis XVI.

In this series by Farrell’s the images form puns, innuendo and a sense of scandal.

You can read more about Farrell’s work in Vol V of Art and Architecture of Ireland
