The Royal Irish Academy Charlemont Awards ceremony will be held in Academy House on Monday 15 February 2016 at 18:00.

Named in honour of the Academy’s first President, and notable Grand Tourist, James Caulfeild, the 1st Earl of Charlemont (1728–99), this scheme is the successor to the acclaimed Mobility Grants, which was established by the Academy in 2007. Building on the success of that scheme, the Charlemont Grants are unique in offering funding for short international research trips, to support primary research in any area. The Charlemont Grants facilitate access for early-career researchers to important international scientific and cultural resources. This scheme then, speaks to one of the Academy’s most fundamental missions by identifying and encouraging excellence in all areas of scholarship in Ireland.

Since its inception the scheme has funded 126 projects, across the sciences, humanities and social sciences. It has funded visits to over fifty countries, with a total fund disbursed to date of over €245,000. This year the Charlemont awards will fund a further 26 research projects, please see the full list of scholars here

Aside from the obvious, immediate and intangible benefits, the scheme has also resulted in a large number of longer-term profound impacts for the grantees. Already we can see large numbers of publications, directly linked to the original funded research, beginning to appear in high impact and high quality publication outlets; some have become recognised experts in their fields. Most significantly of all however is the positive ‘bounce’ afforded to grantees in their respective career trajectories by virtue of their awards.

Funded by the Academy, the Charlemont Grants are designed to act as a career springboard to assist scholars in strengthening their international mobility and developing international collaborative networks. In short, to fund excellent people with excellent ideas. These are small grants, with high impact, and are complimentary to larger programmes offered by other funders including the Irish Research Council and SFI.
