Open workshop on energy storage in electricity grids.

The Royal Irish Academy and the Energy Institute UCD are hosting an open workshop on Energy Storage in Electricity Grids on the 23rd March 2016.  Expert speakers from industry and academia will explore the changing role of energy storage in 21st century electricity grids, with increasing shares of variable renewable generation.  The workshop will consist of four sessions where the following topics will be covered:

  • Grid-scale energy storage systems – emerging technologies, including Li-batteries, Redox-flow cells and power to H2
  • Energy storage within the wider system – using energy storage as a flexibility option for wind and solar integration, both dedicated energy storage and “virtual storage” (e.g. the intelligent coordination of thermal energy systems through demand management mechanisms).  The important subject of levellised costs of energy storage will also be discussed
  • Case studies - representatives from a number of ongoing storage projects in Ireland will present details on technologies and the business cases
  • Energy storage systems combined with PV – the growing market for small scale storage combined with solar PV will be explored, addressing the social and economic drivers and the various ownership and business models

The final programme for the event can downloaded here.
