The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Eileen Harkin-Jones

Ulster University

Professor Eileen Harkin-Jones was appointed to the Royal Academy of Engineering-Bombardier Chair in Composites Engineering at Ulster University in 2014. Professor Harkin-Jones has been involved in plastics processing and materials research for over 20 years and has published over 150 papers in this area. She has extensive experience of technology transfer to the plastics industry, winning two national awards for excellence in this regard. She was appointed to the All-Party Parliamentary Manufacturing Group in December 2014 and is currently the Chair of the Royal Academy of Engineering Materials & Mining membership committee. Professor Harkin-Jones is involved in the promotion of gender equality in STEM at an international, national and local level and is the Athena SWAN Coordinator in the UU School of Engineering.  She is a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering Connecting STEM Teachers Programme. She served as a panel member for the UK Research Excellence Framework, REF 2014 and is a member of the ETA panel for the 2018 New Zealand PBRF (Equivalent to UK REF).
