1916 Portraits and Lives panels unveiled in Pearse Station

The Royal Irish Academy, in partnership with Iarnród Éireann, is bringing the stories of 16 men who played major roles in the Rising to commuters across the country. Each panel features a portrait by artist David Rooney, specially commissioned by the Royal Irish Academy and OPW, and a short biography of the leader also taken from our recent publication 1916 Portraits and Lives. A QR code included in each panel will allow commuters to download the relative chapter of the book for free.

The 16 men featuring on the panels are Roger Casement, Eamonn Ceannt, Thomas Clarke, Con Colbert, James Connolly, Edward Daly, Seán Heuston, Thomas Kent, John MacBride, Seán MacDiarmada, Thomas MacDonagh, Michael Mallin, Michael O'Hanrahan, Padraig and William Pearse, and Joseph Plunkett. While the full collection of 16 panels is now on display in Dublin’s Pearse Station, individual panels are also in the relevant stations across the country. A series of commemorative events will take place at each station over the next few months:

• 16 July - Daly Station, Bray
• 21 July - MacDiarmaida Station, Sligo

1916 Portraits and Lives is a selection of 40 articles from the Royal Irish Academy’s Dictionary of Irish Biography, dealing with 42 men and women whose careers, in one way or another, were deeply involved with the Easter rising of 1916. Find more information about 1916 Portraits and Lives here.
