The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Two station events to commemorate Thomas Clarke and John MacBride

Two special events will be hosted to remember Thomas Clarke and John MacBride, after whom Dundalk and Drogheda Stations were renamed in 1966.

1916 Centenary1916 Centenary

The events are part of Iarnród Éireann's 1916 commemoration programme, in partnership with the Royal Irish Academy, OPW and Ireland 2016. Please note that the events will take place at two different locations:

  • Clarke Station, Dundalk, Saturday 14 May at 11am

The event will be addressed by the Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr Peter Savage and Helen Litton, historian and author.

  • MacBride Station, Drogheda, Saturday 14 May at 2pm

The event will be addressed by the Mayor of Drogheda, Cllr Paul Bell and Anthony J. Jordan, historian and biographer of John MacBride.

Light refreshments will be served. All welcome.

Thomas Clarke and John MacBride feature in our recent publication 1916 Portraits and Lives, edited by James Quinn and Lawrence White, and illustrated by David Rooney.
