Show me your data Galway

23 May 2016

The Academy visited the ‘City of the Tribes’ on Wednesday 18 May for the second instalment of the Engineering and Computer Science Lecture Series.

The lecture, ‘Show me your data, and I’ll tell you who you are: an exploration of data-driven prediction’, was supported and hosted by Hewlett Packard Enterprise Galway at their new innovation centre, which opened last year.  Dr Brian MacNamee (UCD, Insight Centre for Data Analytics, CeADAR and The Analytics Store) presented a fascinating talk on ‘Big Data’ and how it is used with predictive modelling technology by organisations and governments to anticipate our behaviours as customers and citizens. 70 people attended the interactive talk, which looked at the impact of the ‘Internet of Things’ on the generation of personal data, and how easy it is to collect some of this data. Dr MacNamee highlighted some of the benign ways in which this data can be used and also some of the more controversial uses. The lecture will be run again at Ulster University (Magee Campus) on 22 September. If you would like to be notified when booking opens please contact us at info@ria.ie
