Future Earth is the global research platform providing the knowledge and support to accelerate our transformations to a sustainable world.
The Future Earth Townhall, held at the Royal Irish Academy building in Dublin, opened with a keynote address from Professor Frans Berkhout.

Future Earth is a new 10-year international research initiative to develop knowledge for responding effectively to the risks and opportunities of global environment change and for supporting transformation towards global sustainability over the coming decades.
The intended goal was to raise awareness of the Future Earth initiative across the Irish research community in the sciences, humanities and social sciences, and to communicate potential roles and opportunities for Irish researchers pertaining to Future Earth.
The series of presentations drew on international expertise, informing participants about current international developments in the Future Earth initiative.
The Event began with introductions by the Royal Irish Academy’s International Relations Secretary, Peter Kennedy, and the Academy’s President Mary Daly.
International speakers included:
Dr Tanja Suni, Secretary General Future Earth Finland and Executive Director, European Alliance of Global Change Committees
Professor Tim O’Riordan, British Academy
Professor Christoph Ritz, Executive Director of ProClim- Forum for Climate and Global Change in Switzerland
The presentations concluded with a general dialogue where all participants and the general audience actively participated in the discussion.

The Academy also held a panel discussion with national experts offering an Irish perspective on the Future Earth Initiative.
