Heritage Week 2016

Heritage Week is a nationwide event coordinated by The Heritage Council and is part of the European Heritage Days programme. Its aim is to build awareness and education about our heritage and encourage its conservation and preservation.

Every year hundreds of libraries, museums, local groups etc. organise activities and events which are open to all. This year the RIA Library has organised Heritage Week Lunchtime Lectures looking at two very different aspects of our heritage.  An exhibition celebrating the 500th anniversary Book of Fenagh will also be on display.

On Monday 22 August at 1pm Professor Emeritus Patrick J. Duffy (NUIM) will present a lecture on the Ordnance Survey: ‘Colonial experiments in geographical information systems:  the Ordnance Survey and other archival databases in nineteenth-century Ireland’

On Wednesday 24 August at 1pm Dr Bairbre Ní Fhloinn (UCD) will present a lecture on folk medicine: ‘From medieval text to mobile: folk medicine in Irish tradition'

An exhibition celebrating the 500th anniversary of the making of the Book of Fenagh will be on view during week. The centrepiece of this exhibition will be the Book of Fenagh (Leabhar Chaillín) written for Tadhg Ó Rodaighe 500 years ago. Other Connacht/Ulster manuscripts on display include the Annals of Connacht and the Annals of the Four Masters.

The exhibition will be on view Monday – Friday 10am-5pm.
