We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Thirty-eight new lives added to the Dictionary of Irish Biography online

A range of fascinating lives feature in the June 2017 update to the Dictionary of Irish Biography, which comprises those who died between the years 2010 and 2011.

Highlights include politician Brian Lenihan, mountaineer Joss Lynam, politician and moral crusader Alice Glenn, historian R. B. McDowell and journalist and social critic Peter Lennon.

Individuals from the arts include writer Patrick Galvin, theatrical producer and playwright Tomás Mac Anna, artist Helen Moloney, writer Anne McCaffrey and blues and jazz singer Ottilie Patterson.

Soil scientist David Jenkinson, businessman Neil McCann, restaurateur Margaret Gaj, bookseller Fred Hanna and Red Cross volunteer Aileen McCorkell also feature, emblematic of the many intriguing lives to be found in the DIB

This update of of thirty-eight lives can be found at dib.cambridge.org, and brings the total number of lives in the Dictionary to 10,366.
