The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Fifty-seven new lives added to the Dictionary of Irish Biography online

Amongst the 57 new lives added to the DIB online in December 2017, our third batch of ‘Missing Persons’, you can read about the architect Hebert Simms (1898–1948), Theosophist and man of letters.

Hugh Shearman (1915–99), the writer Una Troy (1910–93), sculptor and polemicist James Pearse (1839–1900), the pioneering computer programmer Kay McNulty (1921–2006) and prospector and businessman Pat Hughes (1924–1999).

Actor Patrick Magee (1924–82) and singer and performer Agnes Bernelle (1923–99) appear alongside Emily (1872–1958), Winifred (1873–1969) and Veronica (1890-1969) Wynne, the textile artists who founded Avoca Woollen Mills. Other lives include the prominent economist Thomas Wilson (1916–2001), the US patriot (and mother of President Andrew Jackson) Elizabeth Jackson (c.1740–1781) and Ireland’s first female Olympian, Beatrice Hill-Lowe (1869–1951).

This update of of fifty-seven lives can be found at dib.cambridge.org, and brings the total number of lives in the Dictionary to 10,423.
