Brexit, Trump and the new populism

Volume 28 of Irish Studies in International Affairs draws largely on the theme of the 2017 annual conference of the Royal Irish Academy’s Committee on International Affairs, titled 'Retreat from globalisation? Brexit, Trump and the new populism'.

The election of Donald Trump as president of the USA in November 2016 and the decision by the UK, following a referendum in June that year, to withdraw from the European Union had many and varied causes, but the two events shared in common a ‘retreat’ to a prior world of isolation and dominance, informed by a fair mix of nostalgia and myth. After decades of a neo-liberal world order, based on, and designed to facilitate, growing global free trade and an increasing globalisation of norms, both events signalled an inward turn by, admittedly, just under a majority of the popular vote in the US and a clear, but by no means overwhelming, vote in the UK.

The new issue will be launched on 2 May, to coincide with this year's conference on 'Multilateralism and interdependence: Prospects and challenges'.
