The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Member Profile: Paul Giller

Paul Giller, Zoologist and Ecologist, was admitted to the Royal Irish Academy on 25 May 2018.

He is a professor of Zoology and Ecology specialising in community ecology, freshwater biology and biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in freshwater and terrestrial habitats. He has written 140 peer-reviewed publications and seven books. He has taught and researched in University College Cork for over 35 years, including 15 years in senior management. He has also taught or researched in the UK, USA, Sweden, South Africa and France. He has made significant contributions to his subject at the highest level both nationally and internationally.
